Baker (Walter) Mansion is built.
1737
Built as a summer residence for Lt. Gov. Andrew Oliver, it is located near today’s 464 Washington Street [22 Regina Road]. It is purchased after his death by Col. Benjamin Hichborn in 1782, whose visitors include Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and Lafayette, and occupies it until his death in 1817. It becomes the home of the Dorchester Academy after its founding in 1831. The house is subsequently purchased by Walter Baker, who lives here until his death in 1852. His widow lives here until her death in 1891. The building is then occupied by the Bichloride of Gold Institute and the Colonial Club of Dorchester. It is demolished to make way for construction of the Lucy Stone School in 1937.*
